Over the course of the story, Edna experiences the awakening of both her emotional and sexual self when she meets a young man at the summer cottage she shares with her family. As a result of her awakening, she gives up all decorum, has an adulterous affair, moves out of her husband's home, becomes an artist, and in the end..... takes her own life.
