Dr. Nancy Downing is a new attending physician, who praised two of Konner's patient presentations. Konner appreciated her praise of his but felt that she neglected to discuss a D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate) status with another patient who was coded on Mother's Day. Rather than take responsibility, Downing left it up to the other residents to explain to the patient's daughter why her mother should be allowed to die. Konner viewed Downing's bedside manner to be insensitive and lacking in consideration.
