Dorothy Kalama is Rachel's mother. She is described as a devoutly religious woman, who seems outwardly strict but is a loving and caring parent. After Rachel is sent away to Kalaupapa, the two exchange letters for a period of time. Dorothy, however, stops corresponding, and Rachel's letters to Dorothy are returned. For much of her life, Rachel believes that her mother has abandoned her. When Rachel later speaks with her sister Sarah, she discovers the true reason for why the letters stopped.
