Derek Smeath is the man in charge of Becky Bloomwood's overdraft at Endwich Bank. Though this does not seem to be an important character as things go, it is clear that in Becky's life, and therefore in the novel, he is important. Interspersed throughout the chapters are several letters to Becky from both Derek and his assistant, Erica. Derek spends the better part of six months sending Becky letters regarding her overdraft and trying to contact her by phone in order to resolve the situation. He is met with excuses that range from Becky not getting the letters to Becky breaking her legs.
