Davie Erskine is a young man, who is trampled by his horse and brutally wounded. He does, however, recover from his injuries. The accident, prompts Angus and Adair to ride hard in a jostling wagon in order to inform Davie's parents. As a result, Adair suffers a miscarriage. Though Angus can't be certain that the ride caused her miscarriage, he still believes it to be true. Adair, on the other hand, tells her husband that they had no other option.
