Together with his wife, he bought and maintained Coorain through many years of difficulties, causing it to flourish. However, after years of drought and watching his fortunes ebb away, Jill's father (probably) committed suicide while out on an errand. He was generally a good, kind father with a somewhat serious, but private, Catholic faith. However, in the end depression overwhelmed him. He charged Jill with caring for her mother when he was gone.
