Who is Constable Martin Saldana from Purity of Blood and what is their importance?

Constable Martin Saldana is a former soldier and close friend of Alatriste's. He likes his job as constable in Madrid and avoids doing anything that might jeopardize his position. He is not, however, averse to tipping off Alatriste with information he receives.
