Comandante Vallenar is a comandante in the Chilean navy. He is present in the customs office on Puerto Williams when Glinn, McFarlane, and Captain Britton arrive. Vallenar suspects that the Rolvaag is looking for gold on the Isla Desolacion, gold that he believes belongs to Chile. Vallenar follows them to the island where he threatens them while watching their mining operation.

Over time, Vallenar realizes that they aren't after gold, but rather a meteorite. He then sends his son, an officer on his ship, to further investigate the island. Unfortunately, his son fails to return and is presumed dead. Vallenar follows the Rolvaag to the Ice Limit and attempts to take it down. In the end, Vallenar's ship is sunk by falling ice.
