Colonel Oberst serves as a prime example of a military man. He takes care that Kekesfalva and Hofmiller's affair isn't exposed, and he forces Hofmiller to examine his reasons for wanting to take his own life. Oberst is the first person to expose Hofmiller to his own selfishness and make him see that his own actions directly affect the actions of others.
