Colin Diver is a student at Harvard University Law School as the book opens. His mother Ethleen is a lawyer. Colin completes his undergraduate work at Amherst. He is elected to Harvard Law Review after his first year. Colin is married to Joan and becomes interested in social issues while in college. It is the time of the Vietnam War and the King assassination. Colin is impressed by a speech given by the mayor of Boston and changes his plans to work for a prestigious Washington D.C. law firm. He accepts a position to work as an assistant to the mayor of Boston for half the money.
