Clyde Stewart was Elinore's employer and later her husband. Elinore keeps her marriage to Clyde a secret from Mrs. Coney for several years, believing she would not approve of her quick decision to marry.
Clyde was a forty-something widower when Elinore met him. After their marriage, they went onto have four sons, one of whom died at birth. Elinore described her husband as a private, stern man, who is fair and possesses good character. Elinore never fails to mention her husband's virtues when corresponding with Mrs. Coney.
