Clete Purcel is Dave Robicheaux's former partner on the Homicide squad. Purcel is an attractive and masculine man who has a tendency to drink too much. Purcel works as a freelance private investigator. He also works as Security Chief on the Terrebonne estate film set until he is unceremoniously fired by Billy Holtzner. Clete Purcel is rather large and quite muscular. Robicheaux asserts that Purcel's arms are thick and that his neck resembles a fire hydrant. Clete has reddish hair and an easygoing disposition. Clete has a scar above his left eye. Clete Purcel seems to be his own worst enemy. At one time "the best cop [Robicheaux] ever knew, Purcel's life became a tragedy fraught with marriage and legal troubles" (pg. 57.)
