Christopher, the watchman, is one of the novel's protagonists. Christopher and Clare's stories are contrasted throughout the text. Christopher sees to stake out his own identity..... to claim his independence, something that leads him to become lost in violence. Christopher is born black, and from the text, we can infer that it is his blackness that corrupts him and separates him from reality, leading him to take on the role of The Watchman. He lives and dies trapped within the madness of violence and loss of identity that racism, from the book's perspective, inevitably and painfully triggers.
