Christopher is Catherine's older brother and was her only source of support during the three and a half years they spent locked in the attic of Foxworth Hall. Christopher feels responsible for his two young sisters and this burden causes him to resist the help of Dr. Sheffield when he opens his home to the three orphans. However, Carrie and Catherine both talk Christopher into staying long enough for him to realize that his only chance to become a doctor is to remain as Dr. Sheffield's ward. Christopher is reluctant to leave his sisters in order to attend school, especially Catherine, with whom he believes himself to be in love, but he goes in order to fulfill in himself the one thing that kept him sane during his imprisonment.
