When this character is first encountered, he is described as an angry young Nisei. Kenji is a graduate of college and feels like his life has been wasted before it began, and he has done nothing more than bring shame to his family. Kenji starts fights at the least provocation, and he has his first conversation with Rachel when she talks him out of drowning himself. The two become close and eventually marry. Because of his love for Rachel, Kenji is able to let go of his anger over having leprosy, and he puts his energy into helping those around him. He becomes a much liked and much admired member of the community at Kalaupapa.
