Carla James is young, charming, pretty gangbanger. She had a good life at home but was drawn into gang life for the thrill of it. Carla was often able to charm her way out of trouble, she was also able to win over judges. Eventually, however, Carla found herself remanded into the custidy of the Dorothy Kirby center, and between the services she received at the center and her PO, Sharon Stegall, Carla decided to go straight. In Humes's view, Carla was saved by the system.
