"Trapper" got his name when he caught in the middle of intercourse with a woman in the ladies' bathroom on a New England train. She claimed he "trapped" her. John played football and later became a member of the armed forces serving in Vietnam. When he arrived in Vietnam, he was described as quiet and evasive. Fortunately, Hawkeye recgonized him as his former opponent in football and the two became fast friends. Trapper is known as an excellent thoracic surgeon, and he is even able to teach Hawkeye and Duke a wide range of new surgical techniques.
