From the very moment that Sharpe first meets this character, Sharpe is suspicious. The character is impeccable in appearance and is always very friendly. Marquinez is the epitome of style, and he has a dazzling smile. But something about Marqinez's smile seems insincere. Early on, it is shown that Marquinez has an extreme fascination with Captain-General Bautista. In fact, Marquinez's interest seems to border on worship. Marquinez plays a pivotal role in several events in both Valdivia and Puerto Crucero. He is the instrument through which Bautista exercises much of his will.
