Captain Charles Galloway is a Marine Naval Aviator. He has a reputation for circumventing the orders and is well known by Navy and Marine personnel. After Pearl Harbor, the Navy claimed that all airplanes on the island were disabled, and yet, Galloway and another aviator were able to repair one and fly it out of Pearl Harbor, landing on an aircraft carrier. As a result of this action, Galloway was demoted and sent stateside. Some Marine officers, however, realized what an asset Galloway really was and brought him back to the action in the South Pacific, where he was placed in charge of VMF-229. His plane was shot down during the mission and he was presumed dead, only to be rescued a few days later.
