Captain Ardiles initially appears to be an angry, reclusive man. He avoids the passengers on his ship, and during the audience with Napoleon, Captain Ardiles is unable to hide his contempt.

When Sharpe later meets Ardiles alone, he sees a military man, who is serious about his mission and cares deeply about the welfare of his troops. He drills his men, keeps them in fighting form, and is described by Sharpe to be a man of honor, who is worthy of great respect.
