Calvin Suggs father, Pooky, is a man who holds anger at Sonny's father. Pooky's father, Calvin's grandfather, was killed in the mine and Pooky had to quit school and go to work in the mine to stay in Coalwood. He blames Sonny's father for his struggles. His son Calvin Suggs used to beat Sonny up when he was in grade school, each time the miners went on strike. Calvin tries to catch up to and speak to Sonny, but he hides and avoids Calvin. Later Calvin catches Sonny and causes him to lose a bag of rocket parts in a creek. Sonny walks up to him and punches Calvin in the nose plunges into the creek to try and find his flour sack full of rocket nozzles and nose cones.
