Brother Whitespade is the man Jonas Crow faces across the desk when he arrives at Good Shepherd orphanage. Whitespade gives Jonas Crow the name of "J." For Jayber's, Whitespade is a symbol of authority. Jayber avoids people like Whitespade his entire life, and he will later choose to move on rather than deal with that kind of authority again.
