Brother Francisco is an itinerant monk, religious fanatic, and the founder of the rogue sect, The Brothers of the Ark. He travels the Amazon region, dragging a large cross, and preaching a message of apocalypse and sacrifice. The people who attend his sermons are often hypnotized by his charisma and become followers. Over the course of the novel, Brother Francisco is taken prisoner by the Peruvian Army, only to be rescued by a small group of his converts, who take him into the jungle, where they crucify him at his request.
