Clare's lover, Bobby, is an American soldier who was wounded in the Vietnam War. He was also a deserter. The wound Bobby suffers in his leg never completely heals, as a result of being infected by Agent Orange, a toxic chemical. Bobby's wound is a metaphorical representation of the ongoing wounds suffered by Clare, as a result of racism.
