Bishop Wilfred (633 - 709) founded a monastery in Ripon after completing his studies in Canterbury and Gaul. He supported the Roman side of the debate over ecclesiastical hierarchy in England, making himself an enemy of the local kings and bishops. Wilfred, none-the-less, was later named the Archbishop of Canterbury.
