Benny Baker is Russell's father. He drinks a lot, a habit that Lucy hates. When Benny and Lucy discover they're having a child out of wedlock, they marry against Benny's mother's wishes. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Benny is diabetic, but he has no treatment for his disease. He later dies of diabetes, leaving Lucy alone with their three small children.
