Barry Kahn is a famous singer living in New York. While Maggie is in the hospital recovering after her first husband's death, she writes multiple letters to Barry, telling him about her song writing. Barry finally tires of the deluge of letters and writes Maggie back, inviting her to visit him and sing him one of her songs. When Barry hears the first song, he accuses Maggie of not being original. However, the second song Maggie presents to Barry leaves him speechless. Barry hires Maggie, spending long hours working with her on her song writing and her singing. Eventually, Barry helps sell one of Maggie's songs to Barbara Streisand, launching Maggie's musical career. Barry and Maggie remain good friends and Barry is instrumental in getting Maggie out of prison after Will is assumed murdered.
