Arnold Morgenstern is the owner of a successful import business in New York City. Hit by the Depression, his family must move into a smaller apartment. Fortunately, they are not forced to leave their West End neighborhood.

Arnold wants the best for his daughter, although, he has a difficult time expressing his deep love for her. He also succumbs to his wife's schemes to keep Marjorie and Noel separate. Seeing his mistake, Arnold later gives his daughter the boat fare she need in order to search for Noel in France. He tells her that he only wants her to be happy.
