Ancestors are an important pert of the novel because of their importance in the lives of the Gikuyu people. Ancestral spirits are sought for a number of differeny rites and rituals among the Gikuyu, as inviting the ancestral spirits to participate shows the unified nature of the family. Insulting the spirits can result in bad luck and misfortune, thus, making sure that all ancestral spirits are communicated with is vital to the life of all Gikuyu.
