Alfred Tayler was Doris' father. He was injured during the First World War, when he lost his leg in a bombing. He later obtained a position with an English bank and was posted in Persia for five years. He then decided to begin a farm in Southern Rhodesia, Africa and moved his family there. The farm is marginally successful, but he is always in debt. Alfred is later diagnosed with diabetes, and he is forced to spend the rest of his life as an invalid.
