Alfons' grandmother is described as a strong and matronly woman, who took over raising Alfons after manipulating her daughter to give him up. After the war, she encouraged Alfons to retain his Catholic Faith. She was also skeptical of the Nazis until Wittlich was bombed by the Allies....... after which, she publicly cursed Hitler.
