Alexander the Great (356 BC - 323 BC) was the eldest son of King Philip II of Macedon. He was handsome, self-confident, headstrong and impatiently boyish, yet, he also exuded grace and intelligence, as well as the ability to be a great warrior.

Philip II had a great influence over his son. Alexander was well educated. He learned to sing, play the lyre, debate, and appreciate epic poetry. He also loved to hunt and ride..... he did everything a royal was expected to do. He loved the Homerian epics and revered Hercules, the great Greek god of strength.

At sixteen, Alexander went to war for the first time under his father's command. When he was eighteen, he proved himself an able commander and worthy heir to the throne. Over the next fourteen years, Alexander continued to impress his countrymen and subordinates with military prowess. He conquered more lands than any military leader before during or since in his short lived career. While each of the military leaders mentioned in the book are noted for making great strides during their careers, none can match Alexander the Great.
