The short story, The Suitcase, by Es’kia Mphahlele features two young people who marry against their family's wishes, and move to the big city. After a while of getting no where, and with no one willing to employ him, Timi goes to the bus station where he finds a suitcase that someone has left behind. Symbolically, this suitcase represents hope, a new chance at a different life, and, in the end, a false hope.
