What role did the beggars play in Mama King's escape?

In Chapter Twelve, the beggars arrive at Frangipani House for their donation from the matron. The beggars then come across Mama King hiding in the latrine, from which, she communicates to desire for assistance in escaping. The beggars, subsequently, hide Mama King in the center of the group and help her escape as they leave.
