Hal keeps on her mantel a photograph of herself posing with her mother. She treasures this photograph, in part because she recognizes the way in which the girl in the picture is a wholly different person than Hal is today. The financial struggles, grief, and loneliness associated with her mother's untimely death in an automobile accident have changed Hal considerably and she likes to have a reminder of the carefree person she had been when her mother was still living.
