The theme of Updike's A&P is that of choices and consequences. All of the major characters are faced with making some decisions and then having to live out the consequences of those acts. Sammy chooses, for example, to quit his job. He knows that it will affect his family, and he has to deal with not only finding a new job, but having the reputation as being a troublemaker in town.
