Annie Sullivan was a teacher that was hired by the family to come in and attempt to teach Helen whatever could be taught to her. Helen's family was convinced that Helen was mentally handicapped, but in reality, as Annie discovered, she had a brilliant mind trapped inside of a body that was unable to communicate.
