The Merchant is never given a name, but most scholars state that he was probably a merchant of Staple, which is a type of governmental position because he also dealt with foreign trade. The foreign staple was located at Middleburgh, as is mentioned by Chaucer, and as also mentioned by Chaucer, most were often corrupt.
