What is Modernism's purpose and how is it used in literature?

Modernism in literature is often used to illustrate the absurdity of traditional behaviors, thought patterns, or norms. It is a direct move away from Romanticism, and offers the ugly truth about things, so that realistic themes can be addressed. The pervasive tone is that the world is what you make it out to be.
