Modernism, as a movement, revolved around the idea of the individual's rights, a distrust of authoritarian organizations (like the church or the city's leaders), and the idea that there are many shades of gray instead of black and white truths. You see this playing out in literature in that you might find disjointed timelines, extended narratives, and a purposeful break with tradition.
