To Kill A Mockingbird

How would you characterize the crowd that came to the trial? Why do you think Harper Lee described them in such detail?

The crowd that came to the trial gathered together like they were attending a social event. In my opinion, Lee wanted to illustrate the extent of the drama and entertainment of the trial. Rather than taking things seriously, the crowd's demeanor was inappropriate. Lee's description helps us to understand why Tom is found guilty, even after Atticus presents his defense. Tom never had a prayer, and the only people who attended the trial with the sober behavior of concerned citizens were those from the black community.
