The pin that the monk wears in the canterbury tales. Why is this pin strange or unusual for a monk?

The pin that the monk wears in Canterbury Tales is quite odd for a member of the clergy to be wearing. First, it is golden (so much for the vow of poverty). Secondly, it is a lover's pin with a love knot at the end (so much for the vow of chastity).
