The main theme is the poem, Richard Cory, is appearances versus reality... the way that looks can be deceiving, and the way that money cannot buy happiness. The poem's main idea revolves around Richard Cory.... a man seen to have everything; good looks, money, and staus.... but a man who in reality doesn't have happiness. In context, someone we might envy without real reason.
