In the opening lines, the poet uses religious imagery (Madonna and child) to illustrate his subjects.... a mother's love, a child's fate, and the smell of death.

No Madonna and Child could touch
that picture of a mother's tenderness
for a son she soon would have to forget.
The air was heavy with odours
