The problem of identity is a direct reaction to racism and the desire not just to belong.... but to be a part of the dream that Clare and Charles both have.... the American Dream of hope, freedom, and equality that they believe they will find in America.

Sadly, once they arrive in America, identity becomes even more confusing. Boy attempts to pass himself off as white, and he encourages Clare to do the same. Kitty, on the other hand, embraces her cultural identity and refuses to turn her back on who she is..... although he skin color is just as light as her siblings, she will not turn her back and try to be something she isn't.

Another example of identity can be found in Harry (Harriet) and gender identity.
