The author's purpose in the poem, Medgar Evers, was to bring attention to the courageous act that was Mr. Evers' life and that his martyrdom and life's work was not offered in vain. An amazing line, which shows this, is where she writes that Evers 'leaned across tomorrow'. His work, and the work of those doing similar work during that time and era, have had a lasting impact.
