I would use the words sad yet determined to describe Ellen. She is sad that her mother is either unable or unwilling to support her in her school and extra-curricul endeavors, and yet, that sadness does not interfere with her determination. In the end, we learn that Mama's support and appearance at the spelling bee.... her courage to do something that she was afraid of, directly impacts and makes Ellen even more determined to achieve her goals.
