William Golding manipulates the theme of gold versus evil (narrative element) to illustrate the motif of savagery in Lord of the Flies. He does this through characterization (for example, the pig hunt and Simon's death). He juxtaposes those characters whose internal mechanisms tend toward civilized thoughts with those whose thoughts have become debased and immoral. Thus, the shock is increased and the theme made more evident.
