How does Ann know that John discovered her affair?

When Ann's neighbors find John's dead body and apprise her of her husband's death, she goes out to see his body for herself and immediately takes his frowzen hand in her own. When she looks down, she sees a smear of white paint, which suggests that he entered the house, discovered her affair, and went back out into the storm to die..... a final sacrifice.
