The demise of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of the Indians as wild and bloodthirsty. The government responded to Bighorn by sending one of its most successful Indian fighters to the region, General Ranald Mackenzie, who had previously been the scourge of Commanche and Kiowa Indians in Texas.
